OUR REGION
The Greater Hamilton region is located in a high rainfall zone in the heartland of Victoria’s Western District.
It covers a rich landscape of more than 6600 square km, with the retail and service centre of Hamilton supported by the surrounding towns of Balmoral, Branxholme, Byaduk, Cavendish, Coleraine, Dunkeld, Glenthompson, Penshurst and Tarrington.
The region contains three main land systems; The Dundas Tablelands, The Victorian Volcanic Plains and The Grampians. Nearly half a million hectares of land is under production, and there truly is strength in numbers; each hectare returns a net operating profit of around $210, compared to $121/ha for the state.
The region has recorded a significant increase in returns on prime lamb, with many of them traded through the Hamilton Regional Livestock Exchange, which is the second-largest sheep selling centre in Victoria and South Australia.
The area has also seen a shift towards grain production, with 31,000 hectares planted (as per 2011 census) and 12,000 ha under oilseed production. Plantation blue gums, fodder, orchards and cut flowers are among other top industries, with 15.7 per cent of the population (1211 people) working in agriculture (2011 ABS).
